On October 23, 1958 the Smurfs made their first appearance in a story of Johan & Peewit in “Le Journal de Spirou”. Their creator Peyo had worked previously at a number of drawing jobs. But the introduction of the Smurfs into Spirou would change his life.

Far, very far from here, in a little village full of mushroom-shaped houses live the Smurfs. The little characters are three apples high, have blue skin and are dressed in white trousers and a cap. Yet they are a happy, easy-going bunch - give or take one or two.

The Smurfs speak a very strange language. Some words are replaced by “Smurf”, as well as some of the verbs. Instead of saying, “I caught a cold in the nose”, they would say, “I smurfed a smurf in the nose“.
