Mrs Oldfart was watching the Lehrer Hour, one of the foreign news programs brought by our SBS Television network yesterday when the subject of the new HPV vaccine came up.
A woman came on the show arguing against the mandated mass vaccination (with an opt-out for people with legitimate objections) on the basis of a perception of insufficient testing.
Mrs Oldfart couldn't understand how something which may save the lives and fertility of hundreds of thousands of women could be stalled because a miniscule number of people may have an unspecified adverse reaction.
She's interested in hearing how the Pixies ladies feel about this emotive issue.

I think we still have people here who were affected by the use of drugs that caused serious malformations and it makes people on edge. The other thing I am seeing is that the religious right is equating this vaccine with permission to be sexual.
Having had loved ones, family members, co-workers, and even Pixies who have suffered due to this virus, I am for vaccination. I'm wondering if the vaccine could be administered at an even younger age so the stigma of it being associated with sexual transmission would be lessened. The truth is that men can spread this virus with no symptoms and that is what makes it so dangerous. It does not matter if you are fucking around at 14 or is you are a virgin on your wedding day. The virus knows no difference.

i have a problem with mandated vaccinations only because i have a problem with almost anything that governments do that mandates what i do to my own body, or the bodies of my kids (and don't anyone take that to mean sexual or physical abuse, those are clear and present dangers). it's just my nature to be persnickety about these things. who has the right to determine if a person's objections are legitimate? what are the criteria?

I have mixed feelings about this. While I totally agree that it rubs me the wrong way to have someone dictate what must be injected into my body...without diligent efforts to maintain immunization programs here and strengthen them worldwide, diseases seen 50 years ago (such as polio) remain a threat today.

I too have an involuntary recoil from 'government mandates'. Coming up at in a different societal culture of individualism, personal responsibility and national pride of individual uniqueness, it has been a slow adjustment as we've evolved towards a more socialistic system. The trade offs have been many, but with few exceptions, it has been positive for our society for the most part.
On the other side of the coin has come the realization that with modern technological capabilities, we now have (rather THEY have) the ability to create sweeping, long term change at a rate that does not allow for the reviews and the adjustments of the learning curve necessary. As 'credibility' and blind faith in our government diminishes, it certainly causes conflict in foundations such as mine. As WI referenced, medical advancements have changed communicable diseases that at one time were meaningful threats to every family. And as Lil pointed out, there were devastating errors made along the way.
My personal belief in "advancement through constant evolution, not revolution" becomes more the guideline I function by.
And may you enjoy the Chinese curse of "living during interesting times".

cull the herd, baby, cull the herd...
seriously though, i wonder ... can there be that many people who will refuse the vaccination? will they ever outnumber the ones who choose to be vaccinated?

You're diabolical! Here I am thinking that you are all "keep your laws off my body" and what you're really out to do is shorten the line at the grocery store!

Hoping that Cheyanne and Cobalt (as well as the rest of the people in that part of my state) make it through this latest storm okay. They just broke in on a local TV station and showed some video from near where they live and it looked absolutely terrible.

In my state if you refuse to innoculate your child, the department of children and families as well as the department of health do a home inquiry to determine the risk to other children before signing some sort of "objector" paperwork that will allow your child to attend day care or school.

in my commonwealth, children can not attend school under any circumstances unless they've been vaccinated.
