I just don't understand how they can let a mosque be built THERE!

Neige 08-05-2010 05:19 AM

I just don't understand why not.

Oldfart 08-05-2010 07:54 AM

Building a mosque on the site may be seen by extremist Islam as putting a victory stamp on the site. It will certainly be seen as such by conservative America.

I had hoped that the site would stay as greenspace with a tasteful monument.

Lord Snow 08-05-2010 09:02 AM

From what I've been told, the mosque is going a few blocks away from Ground Zero, but is still fairly close. Like less than a mile close. I think the biggest outrage is that the people of New York did make an appearance at the variance hearing and did protest the structure being built there, but the judge ruled in favor of the mosque and not the people. I had a discussion about this with my dad just the other day because of something he posted on facebook.

Oldfart 08-05-2010 09:33 AM

Tolerance is a wonderful thing.

dicksbro 08-05-2010 05:16 PM

I could tolerate it better if it wasn't at or near Ground Zero. :boink:

Oldfart 08-05-2010 06:44 PM

A mile is a long way away. Should there be a mandated distance, 5 miles, 50 miles perhaps?

Oldfart 08-05-2010 06:55 PM

I had an interesting experience today.

I was walking along the waterfront here in Chicago when a heap of white Suburbans, cop cars, ambulances and SUVs with funny flags on them went past. One of the SUVs pulled up and my mate Barry, who I haven't seen for ages, stuck his head out of the window and asked me what I had on for dinner. Now you remember Barry, moved from his old place into that white house on the corner.

Anyway, to make a short story long, I had to decline his kind offer. Sadly, a few minutes before I had run into some really nice men who invited me to a couple of drinks at a pub called the Grassy Knoll.I told him we'd catch up next time he's in Oz.

Gotta run before they call last drinks.

jseal 08-05-2010 07:33 PM

Neige,

For many, if not most Americans, building a mosque at the site of former Twin Towers is akin to building a McDonald's restaurant beside General Brock's (and Colonel Macdonell, though few know of him) on Queenston Heights.

Both are perceived as symbols of a foreign and vaguely dangerous threat. That either should be built where each country’s nationals were killed by attacks from “them” is, as has been previously pointed out, easily represented as a victory for the other side.

He did! He did! I was talking to him (OldFart that is) a few minutes after he happened upon Obama's caravan. Seems he went there to have dinner with OF and after a mix-up of dinner or lunch, he settled for talking with some auto builders while OF was on his 'walkabout'. Guess they'll have to both have a talk with their social secretaries.

dicksbro 08-06-2010 04:02 AM

Wish you could have been with us, PF, at Rantoul. It was a fun day!

Another example of what happens when a judge overrides the will of the people.

dicksbro 08-06-2010 07:24 PM

We seem to have a lot of judges that overstep their bounds anymore. :(

Lord Snow 08-06-2010 07:37 PM

I'm not sure on the laws, but I believe precedent is the only thing that dictates that he rules in favor of those who object. I do find the location, if it's as near as I'm thinking, in bad taste. However, it is also entirely plausible that he ruled the way he did to try and keep the peace. I haven't done any looking into the subject, so all I'm doing is guessing.

Fangtasia 08-06-2010 10:46 PM

I'm picking up a new fish today, a girlfriend for my gorgeous albino bristlenose!

My poor, blind, diabetic dog has now been diagnosed with glaucoma in one eye. He's at the hospital over night while they try to get the pressure down. Poor baby has been through enough. :(

A judge has a responsibility to decide a case based on the law, not the will of the people.

Wow...the female albino is gorgeous, really white. My male is a golden albino. Hopefully she picks him not the common lf male to breed with *LOL*

In the instance of the Ground Zero Mosque, the unelected officials whose ruling has been criticized are not judges, but members of a Landmarks Commission.

In the other, that's why almost all laws are passed by politicians - they are accountable to the popular vote. The remaining few are popular initiatives like Prop 8.

As for the condition of the system, one might reflect upon the immigrants to emigrants ratio.

And that's fine so long as judges don't go and make laws. But the will of the people should eventually prevail upon the lawmakers to reflect those wishes.

shadowsfate 08-07-2010 05:21 PM

I just want the world to just go away and leave me be

Lord Snow 08-07-2010 06:40 PM

Now now Shadow, we can't leave you alone. We all have an incessant and insistent need to pick on you. Granted we do it because it's fun and we like you but still.......
